ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate and summarize the teaching effect of" New Technology of Radiotherapy and Oncology" in the form of questionnaire, understand the degree of demand for the course of all kinds of medical students and improve the teaching contents and methods. Methods:The course of" New Technology of Radiotherapy and Oncology" was a specialized elective course in Peking Union Medical College. After two rounds of teaching practices, we evaluated the students participating in the course or non-course participants by anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire items include the course content, setting, teachers and improvement suggestions. Results:A total of 73 questionnaires were sent out, and the recovery rate was 100%. Among them, 52(71%) were from students who chose the courses. 83% of the students" strongly agree" that the teaching content of this course is the latest development, the latest achievement or the problem to be solved, 94% were" satisfied" or" very satisfied" with their learning effect, and 92% and 83% were satisfied with the teachers and teaching plan, respectively. After taking the course, students rated" broadening of mind" (96%) as the biggest gain, followed by" facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration" (79%). 86% of the non-course participants felt the need to supplement the existing curriculum with new techniques in oncology radiotherapy, hoping that the curriculum would" broaden the mind" (76%), improve clinical application (81%) and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration (71%).Conclusion:The questionnaire results show that the teaching practice of this course covers the different needs of all kinds of students, which is worthy of implementation and further improvement.

ABSTRACT

The current approach to management of caries has evolved towards minimal invasive dentistry comprising of early diagnosis of incipient lesions, remineralization and conservative dental treatment with minimal intervention if required. Despite the focus of the dental curriculum on minimal invasive dentistry, not much of it is adopted into practice by the students. We wanted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and skills of minimal invasive dentistry amongst the dental interns of Dakshina Kannada district. MethodsThe data was gathered through an online questionnaire developed and validated by experts. ResultsA total of 244 dental interns responded to the online questionnaire survey. Majority was aware of the principles of minimal invasive dentistry mainly through lectures, although not many had practiced it. Fluoride treatment was the most recommended treatment for the prevention of caries. Although most of them agreed that caries risk assessment was effective, nearly half of them had never practiced it. A greater part of the respondents agreed upon the effectiveness of preventive measures and conservative modalities of treatment in the current day practice. ConclusionsDespite the awareness and knowledge of minimal invasive dentistry amongst the interns of Dakshina Kannada population, the practice of minimal invasive dentistry should be taught to the students and should be implemented in routine dental practice.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although the coexistence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) has been reported, the prevalence of GERD in arrhythmic patients remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between GERD and several kinds of arrhythmia, and the therapeutic effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) on AF. Methods: In Study 1, patients with various kinds of arrhythmia (n=147) including AF (n=98) were administered a GERD-specific questionnaire (F-scale). In Study 2, patients with AF and GERD (n=27) responded to an AF-specific questionnaire (AFQLQ) before and after the additive PPI therapy to explore the effects of PPI on comorbid AF. In Study 3, device memory was assessed as it is related to PPI administration in pacemaker patients with GERD and AF (n=5) to study the effects of PPI on device-documented AF. Results: Left atrial (LA) size and F-scale scores in AF patients were the largest among the arrhythmic patients in Study 1. Logistic regression analysis showed no independent determinants of GERD. F-scale scores and AFQLQ scores showed temporal and partial correlations and significant improvement after starting PPI in Study 2. However, device interrogation confirmed limited AF improvement by starting PPI in Study 3. Conclusions: GERD is prevalent in AF patients. LA size is not an independent determinant of GERD. Symptoms of AF were improved, whereas device-documented paroxysms of AF were not ameliorated by PPI administration. A large-scale prospective study is required to conclude the efficacy of PPI on the comorbid AF.

ABSTRACT

To examine the present state of postgraduate ethics education for residents in Japan, we sent an anonymous self-administered questionnaire to the directors of all 640 hospitals in Japan with a registered postgraduate clinical residency program. A total of 258 hospitals returned the questionnaire (response rate: 40.3%). Of these hospitals, 69 (26.7%) had a program for ethics education and 189 (73.3%) did not. The presence of a program was strongly correlated with the number of hospital beds and a history of problems with ethics education. Respondents showed a high degree of awareness about such significant topics in ethics education as “informed consent, ” “patient privacy, ” “patient rights, ” and “physician duties.”
